Why Most People Hate Their Headshot—And What to Do About It
Jun 4, 2025 | By: Precious Steps Photography
Let’s be honest—most people cringe at the idea of getting a headshot.
Whether it’s that awkward smile, the stiff posture, or the overwhelming feeling of “this just doesn’t look like me”, headshots have a bit of a bad reputation.
If that sounds like you, you’re far from alone. As a professional headshot photographer, I hear it all the time:
“I’m not photogenic.”
“I hate how I look in pictures.”
“I never know what to do with my face.”
So let’s talk about why people usually hate their headshots—and more importantly, what we can do to change that.
1. You’ve Been Photographed, Not Guided
Most people are told to "stand here and smile"—but posing is a skill. A good photographer doesn't just take your picture; they guide you through it.
From how to angle your shoulders to what to do with your hands to when to blink (yes, really), direction makes all the difference. Without it, even the most confident person can feel lost and stiff in front of the lens.
What to do:
Work with a photographer who offers gentle posing and real-time feedback—someone who makes you feel seen, not just snapped.
2. You’re Comparing Yourself to Someone Else’s Highlight Reel
Instagram and LinkedIn are filled with polished, curated, professionally retouched images. It's easy to look at someone else’s photo and think, “I could never look like that.”
But here’s the truth: you don’t need to look like anyone else.
You just need a headshot that looks like you on your best day—approachable, confident, and authentic.
What to do:
Shift your mindset. Your headshot isn’t about chasing perfection. It’s about building connection and showing up with confidence in your unique story.
3. You’re Not Comfortable in Front of the Camera (Yet)
Most people aren't. In fact, many of my favorite headshots came from clients who told me, “I’m terrible at this.”
Being photographed can feel vulnerable. You're suddenly aware of every feature, every angle. But with the right environment, that awkwardness fades—and natural confidence takes over.
What to do:
Look for a session experience that’s low-pressure and built for real people, not models. When you feel safe and supported, your true personality shines through.
4. Your Current Headshot Doesn’t Match Who You Are Now
Maybe it’s five years old.
Maybe your style has changed, your confidence has grown, or your role has shifted.
Whatever the reason—if your headshot no longer feels like you, it’s easy to dislike it.
What to do:
Treat your headshot like your wardrobe or website—it needs a refresh as you evolve. An updated photo that aligns with your current season of life and work can instantly boost your confidence and credibility.
5. You Haven’t Found the Right Photographer Yet
This one’s big.
Photography is personal. It’s not just about technical skill—it’s about connection, communication, and trust. A great headshot photographer doesn’t just take a flattering image—they help you feel comfortable, confident, and in control of how you show up.
What to do:
Choose a photographer who takes the time to understand your goals, your brand, and your comfort level. Someone who’s in your corner and knows how to highlight your best angles without ever making you feel awkward or over-posed.
Final Thoughts
It’s totally normal to feel unsure about getting in front of the camera.
But you deserve to have a photo of yourself that you love—a photo that captures you at your most confident, capable, and real.
If you’ve never had that experience, maybe you just haven’t worked with the right photographer yet. And if that’s the case, I’d be honored to change that for you.
